In a deep dive panel on this remaster, Lead Artist Chris Amaral talked about how there’s a 70/30 philosophy where 70% of the art in any area is left alone as the “classic” art, and that extra 30% is then used to elevate that classic art, and that philosophy was definitely felt as I played. Everything has been completely redone from the ground up, replacing the pixelated sprites with gorgeous 3D models, adding new lighting effects to the environment, and if for whatever reason you prefer the old style, you can switch between the two visuals seamlessly with the press of a button. This is absolutely not a case like Warcraft 3: Reforged with only marginally improved character models and a bump in resolution. We’ll see what else we may see from Diablo before the event is over, but for now, we have some very interesting looking stopgaps before Diablo 4 itself arrives. There is also no date for the Technical Alpha yet, so just keep an eye on your email for the indefinite future for when those invites may go out. Diablo 4 is still likely to be a few years away, however, and Blizzard is hoping these interim projects can tide everyone over until that game is released. Between this and the likely release of Diablo Immortal this year, Blizzard will probably be making a ton of money from Diablo-related things that are not Diablo 4, though they did show off a new class, the Rogue, yesterday, a blend of the Amazon, Demon Hunter and Assassin from past games.
